God sent Jesus to earth to show us how to live. One way He showed us how to act was by telling stories called parables. A parable is a story that has a special meaning for us. A parable helps people understand the lesson Jesus wanted to teach. Everyone say, “parable.”
Sometimes Jesus told parables so people who believed in Him would understand the meaning. But the temple leaders who doubted that Jesus was from God wouldn’t figure it out.
The Bible tells us many parables that Jesus told His followers. Jesus told the people the story of lost sheep. Jesus told a story about a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. That’s a lot of sheep to keep up with! One day, one of the sheep was missing! One little sheep was lost somewhere in the wild.
The shepherd had to decide if he should stay with the 99 sheep he had left or go look for the one sheep that was lost. Raise your hand if you would just stay with the 99 sheep. Raise your hand if you would go look for the lost one. The shepherd decided to go look for the lost sheep!
The shepherd carried the little sheep back to the rest of the flock. The shepherd was so happy to find his lost sheep. He told all his friends the lost sheep had been found.
Jesus wanted His followers to know that He is the Shepherd and we are His sheep. Everyone “baa” like a sheep! We follow Jesus like sheep follow a shepherd. He cares for us like a shepherd cares for his sheep.
Jesus used this parable to show His followers how to act. We know people who are lost just like that sheep. They don’t know Jesus wants to care for them and be their shepherd. We can tell them about Jesus our Shepherd.
