God sent Jesus to earth to show us how to live. One way He showed us how to act was by telling stories called parables. A parable is a story that has a special meaning for us. A parable helps people understand the lesson Jesus wanted to teach. Everyone say, “parable.”

The Bible tells us many parables that Jesus told. Jesus told the people about a father who had two sons. One day, the younger son came to his father and said he wanted his part of the family’s money. He would get it someday when his father died, but he wanted it now! The father agreed to give the son all the money.

The next day, the son took all of the money and went to live in a faraway country. The son wasted all of his money on bad things until he had no money left.

Then a time came when no food was left in the land. The son didn’t know what to do. He had to get a job feeding pigs. The son was so hungry that even the pig’s food looked good! The son decided to go back to his father. Even if his father didn’t welcome him back, at least he could get a job as his father’s servant.

So the son walked back home. When his father saw him coming, he ran to his son and gave him a big hug. The son told his father he was sorry he had spent all the money doing bad things. The father forgave his son. He even had a big party because the son he had lost had come home!

Jesus told the people that God is like the forgiving father. He welcomes us and forgives us even when we’ve made bad choices. Jesus wants us to act the same way. We should welcome others and forgive them for the bad choices they make. Everyone say, “Jesus shows me how to act!”
